Mtv’s 2007 Video Music Awards have finished and we know you’ve been waiting for our take. We’ll just keep it short by making this point:
There may be a problem when you’ve got the New York Times calling you out before the show. One of our generations top entertainers (Justin Timberlake) calling you out not once, but TWICE during the show to “Play more videos.” The most entertaining moment of the night happening off camera. And another of the most popular artists in the world (Kanye West) banning himself forever from you after the show. In closing, we’ll leave you with the Twitter message our boy Jimmy sent us
“Rihanna wins video of the year. Does not thank director. That says it all, MTV.”

“Gangstas, wassup guys?” If y’all remember correctly, we told you to prepare for 300 way back in December. Then when March rolled around that shit slayed everyone from here to Thermopylae, and all the movie execs were dumbfounded at its greatness. We just sat and laughed at those who didn’t take notice.

For those of you who don’t know:
It’s a bold statement, yet one that rings true. Case in point, handing us seats to the triple bill in God’s very own private venue, The Hollywood Bowl, showcasing none other than indie powerhouses Band of Horses, Andrew Bird, and The Decemberists.

So this past Thursday, Mom, Some Guy, and Menomena played a tiddy little show at the Granada and SRO was there to take it in. I call this; A show in three parts.
After having been to many shows, it’s my opinion that most live performances fall into three broad categories:
1) Your $$$ Worth
2) Cold Toast
3) “The Experience”
Of course, there are variances to this rule. Absolutely disappointing and ear crushingly terrible shows don’t even rank in these categories — neither do the utterly amazing. But …

One of the perks of being invited to such places such as E3 (R.I.P), San Diego Comic-Con, random L.A. Parties, and hell, even Star Wars Conventions, are some of the culturally interesting photos we come back with. Of course from the outside some of these may lie closer to the side of geekdom, but when you’re surrounded by scores of actors, actresses, directors, and rock stars you find that even though we’re in mixed company, as always, we’re always the coolest ones at the party.

Thursday night was Regina Spektor at the Gypsy Ballroom with a meet & greet beforehand at Dallas’ most respected music store, Good Records. The meet & greet was terribly fun, as is usual for any event that offers free pizza and beer. Regina was adorable and so friendly. It was obvious, while she alternated between signing autographs and taking photos with fans, that she was really enjoying it. Meeting her was definitely a pleasure.

It’s a Sunday night and you live in Southern California, not much to do. Sunday night football, nah. Some 80’s club, west Hollywood, never. How about a 5$ triple bill of Tokyo Police Club, 120 Days and the Lovely Feathers, maybe. Well Sundays at the Echo in Silverlake/Echo Park is host to a little party called Part Time Punks, while usually random bands play and DJ’s spin some wax, this week was a special occasion with a nice little bill for all the indie kids in the know. I was surprised about a few things at the end of the evening but mostly it was the number of kids present, almost twice the amount than the Sunset Rubdown show we attended there a few months back. Yeah I know.
