Model Justine Joli Makes Sure You Don’t Forget Nerdcore
A few Thursday nights back, those kind, yet clever, fellows over at Nerdcore decided to drop their annual geek-sex Calendar we’ve been fans of. Rather than just announce it online, they decided to blow it out at, of all places, a comic store. Oh, but as you should know by now, these guys do it in style and it wasn’t just some random comic store. It was Golden Apple over on Melrose in Los Angeles. And what better way to mix things up than with the classic party trick: Free Booze!

For two nights, Ghost Robot and Encyclopedia Pictura came to the west coast and rocked it like a hurricane with their latest epic for none other than Bjork. At each of those nights, a representative or three from the SRO crew showed up to get a look at the entity that is Wanderlust and see if all the legend and myths were true.

Well there’s not much to say about this. Not that it was bad, but who really wants to read some long diatribe about what I thought about the show. That’s quite pretentious of me, so I won’t suffer you with too many of my words. I will say that Beach House was a delight as expected, the Papercuts (played runner up) and delivered on some slightly more rugged version of their songs from Can’t Go Back, and I was a little late to catch MOM (openers) but I’m sure they slayed it. Here’s some shots of Beach House at the show if you missed it. Sorry no Papercut photos; they decided to keep the stage as dark as possible and therefor making it impossible for me to get an image that was decent yet not blurry. Enjoy.

Alright kids, get ready. Kanye stepped up his game by bringing Daft Punk into his musical fold and later on, his awards performance. So now you KNOW everyone else is gonna jock his shit (again) and do the same in some different way. Right now, it’s ok, because it’s still fresh and there are tweaks that can be made, but this will only be somewhat fresh for so long.

If you are not reading Kanye’s blog daily, or at least subscribing to his RSS, you must be a crazy. I don’t think another website has brought me more laughter or joy over the past year. Anyway, he has a new tour and it’s called, Glow in the Dark. Awesome. The flyer for tour is up above. Awesome. He didn’t announce any dates, only a taste in the form of a blog post called, ‘The end of the world as you know it’. Awesome. Apparently the tour name was announced back in May, because he was worried that if he held off, someone would bite his shit and do their own Glow in the Dark tour. Well, it’s January and according to plan, no one but Kanye and friends are gonna be doing the Glow in the Dark thing — and now we have an image but still no tour dates. Although if you’re wondering if he’s going to play your town, just ask yourself, does my city have a sports stadium or a giant outdoor arena? Then yes, Kanye is coming to town. Keep your kids indoors.
And to keep on with the Kanye love, even though his last album was horrible and leads me to believe that maybe all his albums were horrible and only his videos are worth a damn — here is a second video version for his song ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothin’ (If you missed it the first time). This one has Zach Galifianakis and Will Oldham so you know I’m sweet on it. It was also directed by Michael Blieden.

If the best part of an “indie” festival isn’t the music – it’s the fashion. The hits, the misses, and the completely off-the-maps are guaranteed to be there. I am particularly charmed by festival goers who suffer for their style. Weather be damned! On Saturday morning, somewhere in Texas, a little hipster picked up a black leather jacket and said to himself: “Hey this will be great to wear outside… all day… in September… when it’s still like 95 degrees.” Hot. Literally. Sometimes a fashion Mecca and other times a bit of a freak show – here’s some of the best and brightest. Consider this the highlights show. Leather jacket boy, this one’s for you!

Personally, last weekend’s ACL Festival happened without a lot of fanfare. I didn’t make it this year. No one I know went either. They said: too hot. Too long. Too expensive. Too many people. Too aggravating. I said: touché. But since summer feels a little empty without baking in the sun at least once while watching a band, Fort Worth’s Wall of Sound Festival was a welcomed alternative. One day. Three stages. Forty (mostly local) bands. Welcome to the breakdown…
