Animal Collective – My Girls
(Chad Von Nau & Jon Vermilyea)

If you’ve yet to listen to Merriweather Post Pavilion by now, it’s a wonder you’re even at this site. You’re probably here by mistake, and maybe you should leave. Animal Collective’s latest is arguably the year’s top album thus far and things don’t look to be changing. Known for their abrasive visual imagery from past videos like “Peacebone” and “Who Could Win A Rabbit“, it was intriguing to see what kind of style the group would adopt for Merriweather.
It was only a matter of time before they took to the world of animation for one of their singles and it looks like they went to the right fellas. Artist Jon Vermilyea & Visual Effects/Editor Chad Von Nau bore the task of coming up with a concept that was worthy for what could be one of the year’s largest singles in the indie world. Obviously they had to get the feel of the song correctly whilst combining it with images that suited the band, which isn’t your normal band. It seems all parties were happy and even though it gives off that iPod commercial vibe, it still has that AC strangeness touch. Primarily the mouths attached to the black bodies, the organisms floating throughout, the green melting versions of the bodies, and last but certainly not least, the hyperspace. Can you ever really go wrong with a little hyperspace in your work? We seriously doubt it.
Check out what Chad had to say over on the good ol’ Antville about the shot:
Jon and I had a little over a month to do this video. We had a lot of ideas, but ultimately we had to keep it basic so that we could actually finish. For those of you that don’t make videos, just so that you have some perspective, this video represents about 500 hours of work on our part. Having more time or a shorter song would have been GREAT, but I’m still really happy with how it turned out. Thanks to everyone who had something nice to say, this was really a labor of love.
