Kanye West has some new stuff about to drop. An album? 808s & Heartbreak? Who knows. Does it really matter at this point? Probably not for another few weeks when it leaks before it comes out, even though its release date was already pushed up from December to November. Damn, now that we think about it, we wonder if it’s already out and considered an oldie in the blogosphere.

Whatever. Hype Williams puts his hand into this animated video which pulls its inspiration from American Pop. Although how much of a hand he had in it remains to be seen. He showed the movie to Yeezy, who loved it and then as Ye says, “WE RECORDED REAL PEOPLE AND THEN HAD 65 ANIMATORS IN HONG KONG HAND DRAW OVER EVERY CELL.” In our head, we’re thinking, “We didn’t want to/didn’t have the time or money to make it clean like Waking Life or A Scanner Darkly, so we went old school 80’s and sold it as ‘Pop Art’. See also “Shutter Shades.” Who knows, we could be wrong, we’re dicks like that. Either way, 65 High Fives to the animators holding it up for West and keeping his name in the spotlight over in Hong Kong. Well played.

    Oh my god! What the crap Kanye?! Remember when Good Life came out right after the D.A.N.C.E. animation? Yeah, you can tell this was made in an iPod influenced animation sweatshop. What’s worse is they probably paid them less than the 10K they paid Plympton for heard ‘em say. Am I the only one that thinks Hype Williams is an overrated director? Stronger also, had some seriously awkward filming. You’re not assholes. Just keeeeenly aware.

    Hype is definitely an interesting entity. I like the shine he brings to his work, even if he’s just photographing someone sitting in a chair. Although, it says something to me that his only film is Belly and he hasn’t really done much since, except for the random video. Doing an animated shot is one thing, but with Hype’s style, I guess I kinda expected something more than just some rotoscoped action. Maybe the song is also partially to blame. Either way, thanks for not believing we’re assholes. We actually figure ourselves to be more along the lines of a Sonofabitch. :)
