Cat Power – Space Oddity
[David Bowie Cover]
(Lincoln MKS Ad)

I’m really not sure if this needed to be posted more because its concerning Chan Marshall, or because its concerning David Bowie? Seriously, let’s think about this. On the one hand we’ve got Cat Power. Probably the perfect candidate for a Boner Party
Honestly, does it even matter that it’s for a car commercial? Give us a proper full version of this song, with Chan’s other commercial cover of “Hanging on the Telephone” and frankly, you could use the songs for High School Musical trailers all day. It could be worse, someone like Adam Sandler could’ve obtained the rights to “Space Oddity” and sung it in a Happy Madison production. Oh wait, nevermind.

Uh..do you have a point? Not sure if you like…or dont like the song, band, commercial or whatever. Try to be a little more clear or at least (as I said) try to have a point!
Yeah, she is cute, but “the perfect candidate for a ‘boner party’”? What the hell is a ‘boner party’ anyway and as a hetero male, I dont think I’d care to be at a party with a bunch of guys struttin around their hard ons! She is averagely cute, but I wouldnt go any further than that….and your comment..”its Bowie”..whats that imply? Is it so difficult to just possibly enjoy or not enjoy the song without having to knock it? Hmmm…to each his own I guess!
“It’s BOWIE”, is a quote from Almost Famous.
I’ll agree on the ambiguity though.
I’m not in the habit of fawning over a commercial, but this is one of the most mesmerizing productions I’ve ever seen. Chan Marshall’s voice is intoxicating. Please coerce her inot a full rendition of Space Oddity.
Jim: Relax buddy. The post is about Cat Power and David Bowie. Their shit is automatically awesome, I shouldn’t have to spell it out for you. You looked into this post way too deep. Sit back, watch the commercial, or whatever you have to do, and listen to Cat serenade the world with some choice Bowie.
As for Boner party, if you click on the word, it will take you to the “Boner Party” site. It’s not an actual “Boner Party” its an expression relating to someone’s hotness. And yeah, “It’s BOWIE” is from Almost Famous, which is why I put up the trailer and told you to watch at 1:44 into the trailer. Seriously, how much hand holding do you need.
Jack B: If there is such a thing as a full rendition of Chan’s “Space Oddity” floating around, you better be sure I’ll let you kids know. Also, be on the lookout for her other cover of “Hanging On The Telephone”. I’d kill for that as well.
I am glad i aint the only one lovin this song, commercial.
ive looked for like an hour and i cant find the full version of that song… I NEED IT.
There has to be full version somewhere. Who in the hell puts that kind of production into a 20 second piece of a song without bothering to record the whole thing? I have to believe there is a full version somewhere and if it hasn’t been released it will be at some point. I just saw the commerical for the first time and I think I was online looking for the song before the commercial ended.
Hey guys, sorry for being a gay idiot and posting that first response, I should’ve realized after reading the passage that the writer is obviously speaking of the commercial/song in a mocking tone, and thus is obviously not in favor of this song being paired with an MKS commercial.
Ha ha! This is “the Jim” that actually posted the original comment at the top and sorry if it came across as cranky or judgmental…I’m a huge HUGE Bowie fan and now, thanks to this commercial a fan of hers as well! I really just didnt understand his position (whether he actually liked it or not) and thats all I was trying to find out. To each their own and far be it from me to be judgmental so if I ticked anyone off, please…accept my apologies.
I am flattered however that someone actually wrote in, posing as me and posted a comment that starts with “Hey guys, sorry for being a gay idiot ” Now thats funny! I’ve seen several of these messages come into my inbox but never looked at any of them til this one and its so funny that I did because it was this boneheads message! Dude,…clean the cheesy poofs off your shirt, get outta your moms basement, get a job and a life….its a lot of fun out there in the real world!
this guy jim complains about being confused yet cant make a clear point.. he reminds me of john kerry.. thanks for the site Los, and there is a full version of the song.. it is not out yet..

Ok Update: I sent a letter to Cat Powers music label Matador Records. I wrote to them inquiring about any knowledgeable news pertaining to the possibility of a full version of Space Oddity being released by Cat in the foreseeable future. The reply I got from Matador Records yesterday is below.
Ms. Powers music is her own artist rendition[s]. Her musical style is primarily driven by other past & present musical influences. Ms. Powers is a fan of D. Bowies, having said that, she was contracted to sing the cover for the Lincoln (Lift-Off) television ad featuring the D. Bowie (Space Oddity) lyrics. Ms. Powers music is not strongly influenced by D. Bowie. At the current time, Ms. Powers doesnt have any intention on recording the David Bowie (Space Oddity) track cover for release
F.Y.I. The track Space Oddity IS NOT on her new 6 track album due out on 12/09/2008. I encourage others to also write in and inquire about the possibilities. Or just write in and make a request for them to produce the cover track. Maybe if enough folks ask, then maybe we might just see the full version of the Space Oddity cover track by Cat Powers. The address to write them is Cat Power c/o: Matador Records 304 Hudson St. 7th Fl, NY, NY 10013
Thanks for that update. Seems like a no brainer for Cat to include that song, but oh well. Everyone, get your pens and paper out, send some MAIL!
Hey, HUGE fan of the song, and when i heard it in the commercial I went searching right away, I think everyone should write a letter now and fast.. Faster… FASTER!!!!!!!!!!
Hiya, Kids!!!!!!!!!!
First off…Has anyone even bothered to check out the Lincoln in the afore-mentioned ad? Doubtin’ it. When the music bed gets more attention than the actual product it’s trying to help sell, we got problems. Now I’ve heard the full rendition of the tune,(Yes, Virginia…there is a full version!), but Matador Studios is contractually(?) obligated to Ford Motor Company to wait until the ad campaign has run its course before it can release the song to the general public.Talk about a crock o’ sh*t, huh?
There is, however, a full version somewhere on YOUTUBE, but it plays on one channel, so you don’t really get the full range of the song. All in all, it isn’t that good… it’s not bad, mind you, but you can tell that the production was not done with an overall quality-based product, (Geared to the music lovers out there) in mind. Sell the cars-get a check-move on with your career.
Whaddever it take to pay the bills, nes-pas?!?
The rumor in my biz is that Bowie made out SO MUCH BETTER than Cat. Judging from the cover version itself, he made out better in more ways than one.
