Kate Maki – We Are Gone (Scott Cudmore)

This video is a video about making a video. Well not really. Scott describes it in a much more meaningful way.

In a way, we just simply filmed exactly what was happening, limiting the amount of “artifice” as much as possible, or at least as much as was necessary to create something that matched the intensity of her performance.

Shot by Lee Towndrow with his digital camera’s ‘film-mode’, Scott Cudmore, while seen capturing the sound in the clip, matches the nakedness of Kate’s song with a stripped down, bare bones filming of her. There is definitely a Dogme-ness to it, a natural ascetic that let’s you focus in on her performance rather than be distracted unnecessarily by fluff.

I wouldn’t say that this is a more “honest” approach to making a video, but you do get a real live performance, and the final video is the first take we shot, before we’d mapped out any choreography with the camera and before Kate had had much of a chance to practice the song (a song she hadn’t really played since recording the record).

Magically and beautifully simple.
