Conor Oberst – Souled Out!!! (Alan Tanner)

Hold on let me check. Yup, Stereogum and Pitchfork are still playing the directors-can-go-fuck-themselves-game. Why has no one risen up and made a fuss about this. Directors should follow in the trend of Rik Cordero and put their name ‘in’ the video, therefore not leaving it up to the hacks to include in the witty rebuttals of their art.
So what we have here is Conor finally going solo. No longer shackled by the production of Mike Mogis or the Bright Eyes moniker, he’s set out on his own….and it sounds exactly as you would expect it too. ‘Less produced and less slide guitar’. Don’t misinterpret though, there is nothing wrong with that and the album goes on to prove that Conor can do it on his own, as can be witnessed with this song.
The video is the work of Alan Tanner, a film director from Omaha who is probably best known for is comedy skits/weekly movies he does for Saddle Creek. He does a great job here filming a funny and rompish clip that showcases Conor in a new light. No longer bogged down by his melancholy or self-loathing, he’s set loose to play in front of a projector and sing about how Heaven is all ’souled out’ and that ‘you won’t be getting in’. Bravo.
AND this brings up another thing. Fucking Pitchfork, at least this time it’s not Mark R. but rather Marc H. In his blip about the video he tries to sound smart and witty as usual, but in his final sentence when he’s bringing it all together, he blunders the fuck out of it.
I guess I’m one of those fogeys who still longs for the days when Oberst sang like he had something Important to say, but Oberst & co. look like they’re having fun in this one, goofing in snorkel masks, in front of fake backgrounds, under manufactured snow, etc. Seems authenticity is in the eye of the beholder. “You won’t be getting it,” Oberst sings, as if laughing at his own private joke.
He quotes the lyric as “You won’t be getting it”, like Conor is telling a joke. Like the whole video is a joke. That’s the crux of his entire paragraph and he fucked it up. Hey Mark, the line is ‘You won’t be getting IN, it’s all souled out – heaven’. You should have just stolen Stereogum’s line about the video being a ‘riff of Plato’s cave allegory’. I liked that. I won’t rest till these people stop getting paid.

Goddamn I liked the hell out of that shit.
The concept was pulled off expertly.
With just slight turn here and twist there, I feel like that could have been a Weezer video just as easily. Not a bad thing.
looks like Marc over at the Fork figured out his mistake and made an edit. Too bad you didn’t take a picture.

I have this mental picture of Brian strolling along the intersection of Pitchfork Ave. and Stereogum Ln., twirling his nightstick and polishing his Sheriff’s badge, just *waiting* for some young punk to step out of line.
