Blast From the Past: Sunny Day Real Estate

Back when MTV had any balls and made money from playing music videos they did a show called 120 minutes. Cool bands would come down and play music and talk and shit like that. Well behold, the Subterranean blog is digging through all the old archives and posting them up. Thanks.
Sunny Day Real Estate is one of my favorite bands from the 90’s. Amongst a slew of grunge, rap-rock, and Weezer they played the emo, slow-to-fast, sing-to-yell style of music before pop-punkers decided to make it their own in the 00’s. Singer Jeremy Enigk belts out verses in an unstoppable voice and seeing this performance has made me put on Diary and (the Pink Album) to work to all day. Check this out and feel some nostalgia for simpler times. If you have never heard of SDRE, go buy their albums, they are probably better than 75% of the bands you like.

Nice. Not sure why, but none of the SDRE albums hit me as hard as Enigk’s solo album Return Of The Frog Queen. Hunt it down if you haven’t heard it… It sounds like what hobbits listen to when making love. It’s scary, yet beautiful. Precious, indeed.
None of the follow-up solo albums did much for me. Same goes for the reunited Sunny Day stuff. And, don’t get me started on the Sunny Day as the rhythm section for V.1 of the Foo Fighters.
rah rah, fellas…
Steve
I’ll have to track that down because it sounds intriguing and I do like hobbits. I’ve heard some of his solo stuff but never got into it. Nothing from ROTFQ so my hopes are high. I’ll swing by and let you know soon.
Hunt it down. It’s weird and orchestral. Way more dynamic and cathartic than the more recent solo stuff (which I agree is boring).
