Great article. Thank you. More people should open the floor to this discussion. I have always thought of music videos as an opportunity for a visual artist to apply his craft by interpreting a musicians ideas. Yeah but how does it make us any money?! Says man in suit. Well that's not really my job, you know. It's interesting the complete failure of the music industry to market the "music video" in this current climate. It has limitless applications that haven't even been explored. Regardless people like us will continue to make them and that's pretty noble, I think.

One thing I never see discussed in essays about the purpose of music videos is their ability to transform or establish an artist's image. The list of acts who've been able to use music videos as a self-mythologizing tool is endless. Bjork, The Beastie Boys, Weezer, Michael Jackson, Busta Rhymes, U2, Green Day, My Chemical Romance- they all used music videos to become larger than life and establish their image. Picture any of those artists in your mind and you're probably picturing one their videos. I still think fans anticipate music video releases as opportunities for bands to "show what they're all about". A music video release can set the tone for the success of an album (See Green Day's 'American Idiot'), can help a performer to stand out from the crowd (Busta's 'Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See'), and establish a pop act as an 'artist' (Bjork in every single one of her videos). Maybe it's a loss-leader, but if used properly, music videos are an invaluable tool for the long-term success of an artist.

Nice job. Mr. Oswalt would be proud.

Music videos in video games = SingStar. I'm sure Rock Band and Guitar Hero will come around.
