ROGUE

For some, it might be strange to see Rogue Wave putting out a video almost a year after their album came out. Especially, since it’s just for their second single. However, if you’ve noticed closely, you’d have seen them popping up here and there with certain bands, in certain movies or tv shows, commercials and at many festivals. Not to mention they’re on tour with Death Cab at the moment. So if anything, they’ve been super busy and it’s a wonder they’ve got a new video at all.

Normally, this kind of comedic video goes south really bad and in which case, i’d warn against anyone shooting the same kind of thing. However, you gotta admit this is worth a chuckle. Yes it’s directed by Bob O. of Mr. Show fame, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee gold. Check the Strokes’ “Juicebox” to see how bad things can get.

There’s no real explanation for why The Karate Kid is referenced in this shot, which in turn means there’s no real explanation for why I think its so funny. Maybe it’s the randomness of it coupled with Bob’s determination and obsession with it being in the video. Also, don’t miss out on the subtleness of how Odenkirk directs the polished performance of the band. Even though he’s joking around, shit still looks proper. Now, if only he could help me with those pesky lyrics, whilst I check out their Flickr.

The Karate Kid is referenced because the story took place in a neighborhood in Reseda.
