Butterfingers

There is a fine line between genius and insanity, and Lung at Perish Factory knows how to straddle both sides of the fence at the same time. Inherently, he has made an extremely simple video, complicated. Everyone loves it and he doesn’t even seem to care. We came to him wondering about his inspirations and passion for music videos and this is what we got.

[SRO] Let’s start at the beginning, how did this all commence? Did you find the
band or vice versa?

[Lung] Through a bunch or herberts parading as a band called fangs, they are horrible, horrible people, that i have known for a while, but tim simenon had them in his phone book for some reason, ive been into tims music since i was little, and watch attack alot which was his powell peralta collaboration which remains as one of the best audio visual pieces i have ever seen, so i had to be nice to fangs for a bit, which was hard, then it payed off as i was cc’d into some email and then that was that.

[SRO] How did you pitch the idea?

[Lung] with one pic and a sentence saying something like ‘everything has a face and they sing and its felt’.

[SRO] Did they dig it?

[Lung] yeah he said looks stupid do it

[SRO] Where did you come up with the idea?

[Lung] on a tube

[SRO] Tell me about how this video came about. Were a lot of people involved?

[Lung] me and my mate d nut. and my mum made the puppets on her machine.

[SRO] Did you set out to make the most super cute video possible?

[Lung] no it was jus suposed to be strange, most of them looked retarded i think. i never thought they looked cute.

[SRO] Tell me about the talking squares. Do they have a back story did you name any of them?

[Lung] they had names, some didnt, some were hated some were loved, all were hard work in between takes

[SRO] How did you create this video (equipment, friends, duct tape and rubber bands, black magic)?

[Lung] all of the above, not much else

[SRO] Tell me about making the different components sing?

[Lung] just usual puppet syles

[SRO] How long did it take to shoot the video and what kind of environment was it?

[Lung] the vid took around 5 days to get right

[SRO] Now I’m not a synth player and they haven’t added it to Rock Band
yet, but could this instrument actually sync up with the song?

[Lung] yeah every noise on the track is synced in theory obviously where
humans are you always get a bit of off timing but that was the point. it could happen, not sure why you’d want it to.

[SRO] What would you like people to know/take away from this video?

[Lung] nothing , it is what it is.

[SRO] A floppy disk? Those still exist?

[Lung] yeah look.

Disk in bed
