A nice cap off for the weekend, here we have the video for Death Cab For Cutie’s first single off of Narrow Stairs, “I Will Posses Your Heart”. No doubt you’ve all heard the song and if you managed to curb your short attention span, well then, good for you. I guess Gibbard has been drinking some of Colin Meloy’s long-song writing potion. I still find it hard to believe that there are those of you silly kids who “dig the band’s creepy new sound,” when this is exactly what DCFC is and forever will be (I mean, aside from the poppy single or two, that’s got a bouncy beat yet still fucked up lyrics/intentions).See “Sound of Settling” For better or for worse however, we’re left somewhat unsurprised by the song and thus the video. That’s not to say it’s bad however.

I suppose i’ve noticed a few patterns when it comes to Stewart-Ahn’s later works including one for the Album Leaf, the troublesome O Valencia, and Chris Walla’s solo Sing Again. One pattern being that you’re in for a slow sedated burn. Maybe it’s the materials he’s given to work with, which makes him subpop’s go-to guy for the long haul? Another pattern is the solemn subject, wandering the earth (which include’s “Always For You”, as it’s a split screen of two individual subjects). Maybe that’s attributed to his passion for travel which goes hand in hand with airports. You can almost see how he listens to the music amongst his voyages and comes up with an idea.

Even still, this video won’t jump out at you with some gimmick or outrageous trickery. It’s an old tale of traveling alone and observing. Maybe this is just what this song needed, a video that can’t steal it’s thunder or make you forget how long it is. I wouldn’t watch this to stay awake, but I wouldn’t miss it either.
