Crystal Castles – Courtship Dating (Marc Pannozzo)

crystal castles

There is just something about this song that hooks me. It sounds as if Le Tigre went all out dance elctro back in the 80’s and then moved to Europe and recorded an album with the help of a subdued Atari Teenage Riot. I’m surprised that no one else is really talking about Crystal Castles or this song right now. Maybe cause it’s a tad old, but the album just came out…oh I forgot the number one rule of the blogger. [Only hype up an album or song at least three months before it's released. After it's released it's only cool to talk about it during a year end list, or a critical backlash column.] So that was two rules but you get the point. A trip over to the Hype Machine confirms this rule, with no major blogger giving any current love to the duo. Some post a song or two but no one is throwing down any straight up love in the form of words. So I guess I will. Basically I love this shit and you should too. Listen and tell me how you feel.

So now that their S/T debut album is out they have decided to put together a music video. Pitchfork.tv was kind enough to debut it for us and even credit the director. Amazing. A very minimal affair, Mark Ponnozzo keeps it dark and dirty for this 8-bit dance track. The video shows what can be done with a few simple shots and excellent lighting. This one isn’t going to turn any heads or win any awards, but I know if I had this projected on the wall at my next SRO dance party, it would fit in perfectly. I love it. Do you?

Got the album a few weeks ago and I mistakenly thought it was Digitalism. Thus I hated it. After I realized that I was listening to Crystal Castles and NOT Digitalism, I tried CC again and it didn’t suck as much. I’ll give it one more go around and we’ll see what happens.
