Gnarls Barkley - “Run” [ft. Justin Timberlake]
(Happy)

I really don’t have much to say about this video. It’s a visual cross between American Bandstand and Soul Train, with an addition of a geeked-out JT, doing his best impression of Screech. Compared to the video work for St. Elsewhere it’s a little tame, but it still has that funky flavor that we have come to expect from the off-the-wall duo. I CAN guarantee you that there will be plenty more clips made for songs off their new release The Odd Couple out 4/08. Gnarls do love making videos.

The Weekly Haps

(Weekly news filter, in case you missed anything. We know that ‘Notables‘ section is a little inconspicuous.)

Walton vs. Ferrell

Oh snaps, everyone’s favorite douchebag announcer/father/old-school baller Bill Walton took his gargantuan facial features and got schooled by Will Ferrell. Don’t tell us Ferrell’s good at dodging fans, AND shooting the perimeter? [Dogs That Chase Cars]

Ripoff Gondry?

Did Gondry watch an old Nickelodeon show and use that idea to make Be Kind, Rewind? I seriously doubt it, but good work digging this up ‘Cole. Did we mention she’s our newest blog to read daily? Bookmark and enjoy kiddos! [This Is CyNicole]

12 Rounds vs. The Oscars

Probably the closest you’d get to an SRO live blogging of the Academy Awards. Also, why aren’t more of you pissed that Fincher didn’t get shit for Zodiac? [Skeet On Mischa]

Crash Course In Comics

Since so many movies are now hitting the Comic Book shelves for inspiration, for once in your life get ahead of the curve and check out Whitney Matheson’s 4-part series on Comics. It’s written by a girl, so no one has an excuse not to take a gander and learn something. [Pop Candy]

Music: An Appreciation

I think this is what most music blogs started out as or aspired to, until ad revenue and cool points came into the picture. More than that though, Moka is all about art and taking a smart stance. “For the Sake of the Song” is just one example of many posts that more than qualify as a quality read. Also, they just graduated to ‘.com’ status, so congrats on that Bubbachups and Squashed. [Motel De Moka]

Oscar Winning Stripper

Diablo Cody isn’t joking when it comes to her ex-stripper status. Do you really think she cares that we’ve seen her ‘trophies’? [Egostastic]

Beach House - Heart of Chambers (Alistair Legrand)

beach house

I was pretty close to writing this video off as just another clip of Beach House, playing in room. The opening shots are typical of what they have done before, but then….then things turn beautiful. Upon reaching the chorus they bust out of their dark and comforting room, into the light and possibilities of the world outside. I love this video for its simplicity but fitting visuals that match the songs highs and lows perfectly. I’ll bet the band was excited too — finally getting to go out into the sun and make some noise.

I’m also struck by the quality of this clip. The visuals are stunningly crisp and a pleasure to watch. DP John Frost should be given a big pat on the back for his obviously talented work on display in this video. Can’t wait till youTube gets its filthy hands on it. Enjoy.

Pitchfork Not As Smart As We Thought?

Now there are two things that are ridiculous about what I posted above. First, that people are still making videos based off of this stock footage. I know we posted on the Dr. Dog clip back in the day. There is also an unofficial Shin’s video, along with some band called the Weather who also made a video. These are just the ones I felt like mentioning and there are plenty more in the comments sections for said videos over at the Ville. So come on people, let’s have some originality. In the year 2008 you can no longer hide behind the statement, ‘I didn’t know’; we all have the internet, it doesn’t discriminate. If you are just plain unoriginal and have no budget then OK, do what you will, but then that brings me to my second point.

Kevin Drew - Lucky Ones (George Vale)

Kevin Drew had a criminally overlooked album of 2007 called Spirit If…. Not sure why it didn’t catch on, to me it sounded like a roughed up Broken Social Scene, with less direction and more noise. Anyway, I liked the album and there were definitely some standout tracks among the bunch, this being one of them.

The video for ‘Lucky Ones’ is a documentary/performance piece, edited beautifully around a show that took place at Toronto’s Lee’s Palace. You’ll notice right away that Mr. Drew is a crazy man, when he set’s the stage by buying a round of shots for the entire crowd. Trouble with cops be damned; the shots happen, the show begins, and it looks like everyone is having a great time. Props to Kevin Drew for spreading around that indie rock money to the people, I can respect a man that buys me a drink.

Finer Living

In a moment of fashion greatness, Diesel and Adidas have teamed up to create a premium denim line for Spring 2008. While I love my Diesel jeans more than some members of my family, I have say that I’m honestly more smitten with the collection’s interactive ad campaign than the collection itself. 83 Ways to Waste Time features inspiring, beautifully shot images of well, interesting ways to waste your time.
