The Discerning Hipster Holiday Shopping Guide: Volume II

Well it’s that time of year again. Marked by heavy drinking and gift giving, two things that are staples of the SRO staff diet. And, since we realize heavy drinking is an easy skill to master, we decided to once again guide our loyal readers to the ideal gifts for your friends and family this season. You don’t have to be a hipster to shop here, our gifts transcend all monikers and classifications. So don’t hesitate, read up and then get out that web browser and start shopping.

Also, if any of you out there have some killer ideas to add, leave us a link in the comments and we will entertain adding them to the list if they delight us. With credit given to you of course. So let us know what we missed that you love!

Band of Non-Sellouts

Band of Horses told Wal-mart to talk to the hand when the Mega-Chain came calling for their music in a commercial. I guess their blip on that Mtv Rolling Stone Magazine reality show was all they needed? [Pitchfork]

St. Vincent - Jesus Saves, I Spend
(Andy Bruntel)

Sweet, sweet Annie Clark. She’s certainly one of my favorite female artists this year and I was quite excited to see she has finally released a video for her debut album Marry Me. To be entirely honest, “Jesus Saves, I Spend,” isn’t my favorite song off the album. I would
have much rather seen […]

Feist on SNL

I just wanted to bring your attention to a few things. I know Feist played Letterman, like forever ago and this performance of ‘1234′ is pretty much a duplicate, but who cares. I missed it then and I missed it now. I only caught the re-run last night by passing by the TV on accident at the right time in the room above mine, and I was glad I did. She really out does herself with this live version. I almost always hate the live rendition of songs I love, from artists I’ve loved for years, on shows that I never watch, for people who don’t appreciate shit. But this time around, I was pleasantly surprised. The version she performs is a little mixed up compared to the album — and that’s how it should be. No one wants to hear an exact duplicate. We want to see energy, we want to see her sing it and enjoy herself. So anyway, check out the performance if you missed it.

You’re Probably a Sell-Out Too

Fiest is hocking iPods. Rogue Wave wants to sell you a Zune. I’m pretty sure Spoon is the official band of Top Chef. The Moving Units are selling make-up or something. We all know that while Conor Oberst hasn’t actually sold a song to a commercial he’s still totally faking it. And then there’s Kevin […]

Vampire Weekend - Mansard Roof (?)

My favorite new rockers from the east coast dropped a new video the other day. From the looks of it, it’s a fool-around-affair, filmed on a boat with fun little clips cut in for posterity. I enjoyed it though and now that I think about it, when was the last time a music video was shot entirely on a boat. Yeah, I can’t either. So bravo on the originality Vampire Weekend, keep it coming. Oh and look at Subterranean trying to jump on board with them, silly internet. Anyway, watch and enjoy a day on a New Jersey waterway.
(oh and thanks Stereogum, you finally came in handy….you know for what, don’t play silly)
