WNYC’s Soundcheck program recently did a little music video state of the union. We had the host John Schaefer, Wired’s Eliot Van Busrkirk, and the hardest working man in music video Patrick Daughters rapping on the odd simultaneous rise and fall of the music video industry. And wouldn’t you know it but the trio pretty much gets everything right. The quick recap (fused with my own comments):

Wes Anderson is a hero of mine. He makes movies that I love and he makes movies that my friends love too. His last film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou reminded us once again, that Bill Murray is the man, and always has been. His film before that, The Royal Tenenbaums is a testament to great film making and one of the best movies made this century…possibly even in the last 3. So it’s no surprise that his new film The Darjeeling Limited is being hotly anticipated, and what more could you want to whet your appetite than a short film by the director himself. Originally planned to be released in theaters and shown as a preface/prequel to the The Darjeeling Limited moviegoers, Fox has now opted to release it for free in the Itunes music store. That’s right kids, it’s available right now, so if you haven’t yet, get your Wes Anderson worshiping ass over to Itunes and start downloading. Heres a link.

If the best part of an “indie” festival isn’t the music – it’s the fashion. The hits, the misses, and the completely off-the-maps are guaranteed to be there. I am particularly charmed by festival goers who suffer for their style. Weather be damned! On Saturday morning, somewhere in Texas, a little hipster picked up a black leather jacket and said to himself: “Hey this will be great to wear outside… all day… in September… when it’s still like 95 degrees.” Hot. Literally. Sometimes a fashion Mecca and other times a bit of a freak show – here’s some of the best and brightest. Consider this the highlights show. Leather jacket boy, this one’s for you!

Personally, last weekend’s ACL Festival happened without a lot of fanfare. I didn’t make it this year. No one I know went either. They said: too hot. Too long. Too expensive. Too many people. Too aggravating. I said: touché. But since summer feels a little empty without baking in the sun at least once while watching a band, Fort Worth’s Wall of Sound Festival was a welcomed alternative. One day. Three stages. Forty (mostly local) bands. Welcome to the breakdown…

For those who’ve taken the time to listen to
Menomena’s,
Friend and Foe, first of all you’ve realized the reward you’ve given yourself by setting aside the time to discover their unique sound. Second, you will have no doubt felt that their sound isn’t the kind that likens itself to puppy dogs and ice cream. So it should be of no surprise that their latest, product-supported shot leans to the side of the dark.
