RJD2 – Work It Out
(Joey Garfield)

RJD2’s newest album, The Third Hand — not so much. Maybe it had something to do with him leaving Def Jux and moving onto XL Recordings, or maybe he was just experimenting with some new sounds, but either way it was a step away from being one of the hottest indie hip-hop producers walking the streets. The album is leaps and bounds behind the enjoyment that Deadringer and Since We Last Spoke bestowed upon me and never comes close to even reproducing moments like ‘The Horror’, ‘Silver Fox’, ‘1979′ or ‘Since We Last Spoke’.
But whatever. Contrary to the album, a video for one of its songs had made me feel nice. ‘Work It Out’ is a lesson in making a visually enjoyable 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Featuring Bill Shannon doing what he does best (think a modern day, hip-hop influenced, Fred Astaire), and Joey Garfield capturing it all in a beautiful one-take clip. I’m not sure what I’m more impressed with, the dancing and stunts that Mr. Shannon is able to perform on his unusual crutches, or the fluidity with which Mr. Garflield, his steady-cam and camera were able to capture it with. Amazing work and definitely worth watching, so for those of you who haven’t, take a minute, sit down and click the link below.

I agree with you that it looks great and the camera movement/choreography is top shelf, but I just don’t see the ‘crutch dancing’ as anything special. That being said, Ghost Robot is killing right now.
