Animal Collective - Peacebone
(Timothy Saccenti)

ANIMAL

God bless the Animal Collective. There is absolutely no reason why any reasonably normal human being can even begin to understand what the hell kinda sounds these guys are making with their instruments. Yet, for some unknown reason, they speak to people. Hidden within their sick, twisted imagery and spastic high-pitched sound, there’s a gravitational appeal which pulls us around it like the sun and the planets.

They’re a guilty pleasure in the purest of ways, like a child who sucks their thumb. There isn’t an actual benefit from it, nor is it something that is encouraged by anyone, yet (for the child) its an almost natural habit that feels oddly pleasurable. Hence, in terms of standard music, AC’s sound feels almost like random spastic recordings, but damn if it doesn’t feel oddly pleasurable to listen to. Am I talking out of my ass? Yes. Do I stand by it? You know it.

In terms of the shot, let it be known that Tim Saccenti is a man making his mark with two shots of crisp work that rustles on the outskirts of the norm. His prior shot for Atlas may have befuddled many but it was the vessel that helped skyrocket the band deep into the realms of the blogosphere Hot List. Now, with “Peacebone,” he and the Collective take weird and disgusting to a saturated level that only they could get away with. It’s love in the most sincerest and freakish viewpoint. Something which we could only count on both TS and AC to bring us. And coming from a band with a cover like this to one of the year’s most talked about albums would you even want anything else? Didn’t think so.
