YACHT – See A Penny (Pick It Up)
(Matt McCormick)

If you took a knife and split The Blow in half, you’d find yourself with one part we in-the-know call, YACHT. Now, if you took that part, which we call YACHT and put a man named Matt McCormick, who’s cared for bands such as The Shins and Sleater-Kinney, in charge of YACHT you’d find yourself immersed in a story of a lost penny in Portland, OR. Don’t ask me why.
But we take what we get, and here, we get the story of one of my childhood fears concerning getting lost in the city. I won’t pretend to know what it’s like to be a penny, so I won’t compare my younger self to one such representative of monetary value, but feeling lost and the greater sense of feeling found are two of the many opposite forces in life we must deal with as humans. I’m sure this kiddie show-like short story of a video wasn’t supposed to make that connection (as opposed to make us smile during our breaks from work) but there ya go.
On the technical side of things, we can’t imagine the pains it took to lug that penny outfit around to different locations, let alone trying to maneuver in it whilst staying in character, but both actor and director seemed to make it work for the best. Although, once again, we’re not experts on the condition of life for pennies, we’d still love to see this particular penny in other situations we’ve pondered, like: Penny vs. Fountain, Penny vs. The Couch Cushions, Penny vs. “Give a Penny, Take a Penny”, or better yet Penny vs. My 6-yr Old Intestines.
I must say however, that this version of “See A Penny (Pick It Up)” had a much better result than the last time I heard it sung.
