NATIONAL

On May 22nd in the year of our lord 2007, we the people of the world will once again be privvy to yet another seemingly classic album by those we would call The National. Entitled The Boxer, those NY boys (by way of Cincinnati) are poised to give us more of what we want from a band we love. No one has really spoken about it (that we are aware of at least) but it already feels right, and we’re sure you’ll agree.

The first track “Fake Empire” has already dropped upon us, yet still we put it up on our oh-so-lovely April Podcast and here once again to make sure we are all on the same page. If that track doesn’t get you all warm and toasty, well my friend, you have a heart of ice. ((Which wouldn’t surprise me, what with all of our “fans” that leave comments.))

Now, normally, we don’t pimp out our love for other blogs/sites unless they a) really deserve it, or b) express their devotion to us first. In this case, we go with “reason a” for French blog La Blogotheque. Aside from being suckers for their food and women, our fascination with the art and creativity that has emitted from France, borders on the unhealthy, and now it includes blogs as well.

Upon first glance, the blog may appear pretty standard, but as anyone who’s in the “know” is aware, the blog is anything but. This includes, but is in no way, shape, or form limited to, their completely idealistic Take Away Shows series. Which pits such powerhouse bands like The Cold War Kids, Tapes ‘n Tapes, and The Arcade Fire in the streets, elevators, game rooms, etc… playing off-the-cuff songs of their choice with almost any everyday appliance or inatimate object. Now listen up closely, cause this involves all of you….as of late, they not only let you stream the shorts, but for the latter episodes, you are able to download phat high quality or iPod versions without charge! You should be there already.

**Update** Unfortunately, La Bogotheque only hosts the files for around 5 days after they post each episode, so instead of downloads, we’ve linked to their stream. Bummer.

The National obviously knew better and heartily agreed to participate, and so it is with their performances of two key tracks off the new album that brings us here. Taken in France during some downtime between gigs, we find the group surrounded by freeflowing ladies swaying to the music, and even better, in a secluded moment just after supper where we get one of the best performance videos I’ve seen, official or unofficial. Neither of these would be constituted as the real shots for the singles, but they could and almost should be. Shot with his distinct grainy, contrast-heavy style, Vincent Moon captures an essence of the band and the experience of being at that dinner table better than any memory or photo could, which makes this nothing short of miraculous. But see for yourself. For those of you who aren’t already acquainted with The National, welcome, have a seat, and make yourselves at home.

Ok Lodi, so it looks like the La Blog has taken down the files off of their server. Boo! If the streams wont fill you up, email me and maybe I can point you in the -ahem- direction of some files!
