So we had our Top 56 videos of 2006 list going for about a month now. You know it and love it, sure, but I’ll let you in on a little secret: we’re not the only one to make such a list (gasp!). There’s been a handful of others out there milking the music video teat, so we figured we condense them all into one nice little package for you. They’re in the order we agree with them. Sort of. Have at you.

Home skillet Derek of Good Weather for Airstrikes just bomb-dropped his Best of 2006: Top 50 Videos (permalink?). There’s a lot of overlap between him and us, proving once and for all that that we are music video gods on high of Mt. Video drinking ambrosia with Spike Jonze and shit. Anyway, we still differ with GWFAS a bit as there are a few differences where Derek has videos we missed (where did Terra Nova and Testarossa Autodrive come from?) and videos we dismissed (Dayvan Cowboy = skydiving skateboard video), but overall we like the kid’s style.
And for the record, if your name isn’t Derek and you don’t run GWFAS don’t steal our screenshots for your video list or we’ll send Simian Mobile Disco to fuck with you while you sleep.
DoCopenhagen: Top 50 Music Videos of 2006
DoCopenhagen started this whole trend in 2005 and they did it again in 2006. Releasing their top 50 way back in early December, the Fins were first out the gate by a long shot (some may say a bit too early). Can’t say we agree with all the choices and YouTube only = baby Jesus crying, but it’s all good in the hood. I love how every year in the comments some guy gets angry about the lack of Tool videos. Homeboy: it’s not 1993 anymore. Let it go.
Pitchfork: The Top 25 Music Videos of 2006
Pitchfork gave it a go with their The Top 25 Music Video of 2006 list which may have been more accurately called the Top 25 Videos by Pitchfork-style bands + random Beyonce video. Nothing necessarily wrong with that approach, but not much here you won’t find elsewhere.
Director File: The Ten Best Music Videos of 2006
Kevin of Director File gives us a short and sweet list of his Ten Best Music Videos of 2006. Completely off-subect: as much as I Iove the DOS screen, I think it’s time for a nice consolidated frontpage. You know, for the kids.
Videos.antville.org: Antville Music Video Awards 2006
Bringing up the rear is the videos.antville awards, which weren’t so much a list as an awards show style affair. In the end, the antville awards served mostly to prove one thing: democracy doesn’t work. Insert a smiley face here to show I’m joking, but it’s the kind of smiley face where I’m not completely joking.
There’s probably more of these lists floating around, so go ahead and throw them in the comments if you got them. And seriously, where the hell are all the Tool videos?! Tool videos are the best videos of the year, every year goddammitrockandroll!!!!
Thanks for the bloglove my fellow compatriots, I’m glad you agreed with my picks, even if they were like three weeks late. Also, I’m glad you liked the “Terra Nova” and “Testarossa” videos, those were some seriously hidden gems I kind of just stumbled upon via blind luck. Oh, and I apologize for jacking your screen shots on two occasions, if you must send Simian Mobile Disco to electro-fuck with me in my sleep I’ll totally understand. I suppose their are worst ways to go than “death by hot jams”.
Actually, I think I meant “Justice vs. Simian” (you know, the “We Are Your Friends” attack). I always get my Simians confused. I’ll stick with the Simian Mobile Disco thing though because it’s a lot less obvious. What would that even mean? Girls make out in front of you until you explode?
