Already, any of you scensters should be on board with Susanna & The Magical Orchestra. For starters, they are little known duo, led by a female. They hail from Norway (Responsible for bands like the red hot 120 days). And they are doing an album of covers ranging from AC/DC to Prince to Bob Dylan to Depeche Mode. Too bad they’ve been around for the last two years and just dropped their 3rd album Melody Mountain.
This shot is for their lead off re-interpretation of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. Talk about hubris. What makes this shot intriguing however, is how does one shoot a song that is so haunting and slow and legendary, yet do it enough justice to keep it interesting without detracting from the song. It isn’t one of the most attention grabbing shots, but it is a lesson on how to compliment a song in the visual sense. The tone for both the song and shot match which is quite commendable in this particular case. Could it have been done another way? Probably, but this is how it was conceived by the also-Norwegian artist/musician Kim Hiorthoy and I’m cool with it.
As a bonus, take a gander over at their myspace page as well for a peek at their version of Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence. Cheers!
