Well here is clip that has made the rounds already but maybe you missed it and maybe you didn’t. Either way Cadence Weapon, aka Rollie Pemberton, is a Canadian rapper and former staff member of the Fork who released his debut LP Breaking Kayfabe at the end of 2005 to slight acclaim and applause. I personally thought it was fantastic, a nice musical departure from the base/thump/crunk infested rap of the day, with a tight focus on lyrics, which isn’t surprising considering his journalistic history. The video gets tired after a bit, with the repetitious scenes of a mock laboratory and CW’s scientists act. It does serve the purpose of creating some parallel visuals for the lyrics, and eventually acts out a ‘red’ hand vs. ‘black’ hand battle, but getting to that point takes a little patience and creates some boredom. The track is strong though and carries us through to the end, so don’t fret too much, just look at it as a lesson learned and go pick up some Cadence Weapon from wherever you pick up your music from. You won’t be disappointed. It’s one of the better rap/hip-hop albums to come out in the past year or so, and if you couple that with the new Subtle, Clipse, Dosh, Stones Throw comp, Lupe Fiasco, and GhostFace, you’ll have a perfect collection to throw your ‘friend in the know’ off the scent of your numerous Eminem and Nickel Mouth (50 Cent) albums. Just trust me, they won’t find them.
