Ahhh, the good ol’ Dears. Trying so hard to separate themselves and become relevant, yet unable to get past that pesky old Morrissey comparison. Although it’s tough for me to sympathize with them, especially when they do actually sound like the Moz incarnate. As it appears though, while accepting the praise (?) at first, it looks like the actuality of being in the presence of the diva himself has finally worn thin on them.
This video employs the common usage of the archival footage that no one really ever knew about before and probably still could give a crap about now. I see what they did here by intermixing the footage of the white upper-crust versus the black civil rights activists. This video, to me, did the job it set out to do and nothing more. It’s not great. It doesn’t necessarily suck. It gives us a look at a specific argument and makes an interesting point. Much like what Varsity Blues did with high school and football.
I’d like to tell you more about the band and the video, but it’s tough when labels don’t send you promo cds and such to better inform us about their crew. Almost as annoying as not letting anyone anywhere know who was responsible for directing your video. Even after an extensive safari through the internet outback. I’m just sayin’.
