Tapes ‘n Tapes – Insistor (Dan Knight)

11 August 2006 2 Comments | written by: Los

I admit, I have a problem. ((Yes, its not my only problem and yes its one of many.)) Those who know me will agree that when I like something or hear about something that is just too cool to be true, I get all giddy like a school girl with the latest gossip and my excitement and expectations shoot through the atmosphere (come to think of it, I act the same way when I hear gossip too, shit man I gotta make some changes…). ((See Superman Returns, Tarantino/Rodriguez Films, Sex, Getting drunk around James and Brian)) Consequently, I end up shooting myself in the foot because no matter how good said event/item is, for the most part, it can’t live up to my infinite expectations.

Cut to Tapes ‘n Tapes video for Insistor off their first full length The Loon. (( I still agree with this douchenozzle’s review )) As my computer downloaded the video I could hardly contain myself from the excitement of what images could match the speed and strength of such a song. After watching the video, however, I wouldn’t say I was disappointed, but I wasn’t enamored with it either. Still, once I got over myself and calmed down a bit, I realized that it’s a video that could have been a disaster if left in the wrong hands, which brings me to todays real lesson kids.

Visual Design. With a name like Tapes ‘n Tapes you’re just asking for cassette or video tapes to infiltrate your videos, but Mr. Knight and crew opted for the much cooler film and reel-to-reel tape to decorate their set. On top of that, they infused it with some Christmas lights and yellowish color in Post-Production to give it that Vintage tinge of a silent film theater from the days of the old school. It’sa niiice.

By going that tiny step past the obvious they kept their cool-indie rep and gave us some nice dipping sauce to go with our Insistor appetizer, muchas gracias companeros! Word on the street is that those Tapes boys are wrapping up the video to their next single, Cowbell. Already they’ve spit some game of lighting a car on fire and such….sigh… so much for that dream of tiny expectations. Peace.

P.S. For those of you not in the know, don’t forget about contributing to theVideo Death Match…..we have only 3 more comments to go to get that crazy suprise!! Don’t let it slip away…call your friends!

My problem with the video is the limited number of set ups. The video has maybe eight basic shots plus the b&w shots. I had this feeling before. Sitting in front of a computer with huge black gaps in your timeline trying to figure out what you are going to fill it with. Ringing any bells Carlos.
