Panic! at the Disco - I Write Sins Not Tragedies
(Shane C. Drake)

PANIC

MTV VMA 2006 Video of the Year
Panic at the Disco won for best video of the year with Shane C. Drake’s I Write Sins, Not Tragedies.

I, on the other hand, have just written both.

Mew - Zookeeper’s Boy
(Sam Brown)

DOROTHY

Denmark keeps spitting hot fire, this time it’s everybody’s new favorite art-rock band Mew. Let me say “prog” and “dramatic” and “Sigur Ros” real quick just to get that out of the way. Alright. I’m not sure why all things with a high pitched feminine vibe followed by manly, crushing guitars come out of Europe. It’s just how that area of the world likes to party.

Mew has been gaining steam here in the states, going so far as to be featured in Entertainment Weekly as a “Must”. If you don’t know, that’s your cue to decide whether you want on the Mew train or you want to dismantle the tracks, ASAP. The band’s sound is a thing of passion. As in: you will passionately hate it or you will love this band so hard you’ll start to pattern your look after them quicker than high-schooler mimics Panic at the Disco. Bob Dylan - When The Deal Goes Down
(Bennett Miller)

DYLAN

I’m not as wise as most in the music world to declare what is deemed as great for mankind or whatnot, so I cannot say whether this new Bob Dylan is as good as the O.G. Dylan. I’m gonna assume not, cause I’m sure the purists would revolt. What I will say, is that I dig this song, most likely because of it’s low key country/folk style. It’s almost the previous generation’s version of Death Cab’s “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” [Visit SRO to read the rest].

Cursive - Dorothy at Forty
(Michael Grodner)

CURSIVE

Cursive’s Happy Hollow, which may or may not refer to the other half of the reproductive team first alluded to by their previous LP, 2003’s The Ugly Organ, has some tough shoes to fill. In fact, I’m pretty sure I can predict what most reviews will conclude about the album without actually hearing it. The Ugly Organ was a clever self-referential album whose wit, concept, and unique sound fueled by the addition of Gretta Cohn’s cello helped it to cancel out some of the negativity that the indie-music press direct towards it for committing the sins of a) being a band from Omaha, and b) being on the same label as “too popular to be cool” Bright Eyes. The Ugly Organ was a great album that was at best admitted to be “okay” by the criticshpere (did the blogosphere exist yet?). That said, Cursive has lost the conceptual gimmick, lost the strings of Cohn, and still remains on the same label as Connor Oberst. The reviews won’t be as kind. [Quickly checks various reviews]. Yep, I was right. I’ll even agree, this album just won’t surprise you like “The Ugly Organ” did. However, there is a further maturity from frontman Tim Kasher that occasionally surpasses all that he has done before. [Visit Shots Ring Out to read the rest…]

Thermals - A Pillar of Salt
(Whitey McConnaughy)

Around since 2002, Portland, Oregon’s Thermals have been sloshing through the indie swamplands for sometime now. I don’t think I would’ve even known about them if it wasn’t for Brian’s anal attentive drive for quality music (Thanks bastard.)

Well, now since some of you probably don’t know (shame, shame, shame) they just dropped their newest album as fresh as Brian’s morning crap, and like said crap, it’s some hot shit! Even the kids over at Pitchfork agree! So you KNOW it’s the real deal. [Visit Shots Ring Out to read the rest…]
