Single Frame - The Slip (Directed by The Los)

Holy Shit!! That’s right kids, this next vid is directed by yours truly!! Don’t worry though, hell hasn’t frozen over just yet (I still have yet to learn the sacred art of cleaning up after myself). This video, however, represents a few days and a couple hundred dollars (800 of my own hard earned & saved cash to be exact, so no fucking excuses on this site allowed about no budgets and the like, this shit was negative budget…G-funk step to this I Dare Ya!!). Shot on 16mm film with a camera straight outta Compt…uhh I mean World War I (sadly I wish that was random hyperbole, but unfortunately it is so very very true) it may not be much, but hey, what the hell have you done lately??

Shout outs to Ryan and Adriana for their quality showmanship and also to George 1 for leaving mid-shoot to go to work, couldn’t have done this without you three.

For those of you who’d like to comment, I say, “Bring It On!!” 2 The only way I can grow as a filmmaker is to take as much criticism as I can, good or bad (just don’t be a douche……at least not to the actors). This is your one (and maybe only for a loooong time) chance to turn the tables on me and put in your 1/2 cent about this work of art, so don’t blow it!

Also, credits were left on in case someone out there would like to contact any of those who participated, let’s say for more work (dare I say PAID work??), any kind of representation, insight about the shoot/character/intentions, or for a date (although if you’re heart’s aching for that little beauty above, get in line, it starts with Superman, passes Zorro, and ends with my Uncle Greg from Amarillo, tough company, yes I know).

Lastly, this video is unauthorized by Single Frame or Volcom Entertainment. It’s purely fan/film school art, so if you’re from either group, it’d be super kind of you if you let us keep this up and didn’t sue me or anything like that (not like I have much to sue for although3).

Aside from all that, seriously, I hope you enjoy it. Class dismissed.

  1. Just kidding, George even did some dope ass effects work on top of making sure all the calculations were correct, if this were a baseball game, I’d be tempted to pat him on the ass…..but that would be gay, and that’s not my parade I tell ya
  2. Or is the phrase “Stick It”now?

Damn Los. 4 years after we tried to make that Faint video, way before you even had a glimmer of film school in your eye, and here we are. You finally did something.

And what an adorable little show it is. Seriously, Adriana is cuter than Cute Overload, and Ryan is sure to make all the good girls go naughty. The sort of retro 50’s style (which may or may not be a simple side effect of your housemates) with the white picket fences and perfectly manicured green grass just completes the package. This video is nothing but happiness rolled in sunshine.

I really like how Ryan manages to both be tripping and dancing at the same time. And his comic timing, those little reactions he does, are perfect. The boy should be in pictures. I also like the simple back and forth sweeping camera theme you used throughout: it really helps things stay dynamic and interesting. Considering you did this with a homemade steadycam makes it all the more impressive. Finally, I think my favorite part is that it’s 3 minutes of your camerawork that don’t involve Brian (or me).

I’m on your case so much, I’m just going to let you ride the wave of my praise this time around. I’m proud, kid.

You really should have had me do the credits though. “Director by the Los”?

To borrow James’ words, this video really is adorablog! My favorite (and prolly any girl’s favorite) part is the candle-blowing-out scene, [and I like the touch of how you can see Ryan’s shoes thru the glass] but my really favorite part is when Ryan kicks Adriana in the butt (you two should hook up in real life).

I wish Adriana was even more stumbly-blind in the beginning. Maybe it’s intentional, but this video ends up being The Ryan Show when Adriana is equally as adorable.

Looks like Dangerous Productions is one to look out for. You are amazing, Carlos!

Los do I need to say anything bad about your video, let the naysayers say there nays. I was there for the whole thing. It does seem that when people let you do your thing you can really shine. When it’s all on you well…see American flag shot. Good job man, you really did something here. But don’t be too content. I need more work. I heard the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have video contest, get on it. I’ll light it for you.

being that its nowww.. 12:11 and i just woke up after a long night of absolutely nothing, by brain isn’t functioning and all i can say is.. i was smiling the whole time and then yelled at my sister to come watch it.. she had the same reaction. awesome carlos!

  6. 6 Adriana Jun 3rd, 2006 at 5:33 pm

Yayyyy Carlos, it’s finally over and what a great time it was! You did such a good job. No joke! My mom watched it and liked it and even said that maybe i should go into acting. Which just proves how good your editing skills are becuase anyone who was there for actual shooting will agree with me when i say there are no skills in that area for me. (ex. Trying to be look surprised.) Also, Ryan is so cute he did suuuuch a good job! I like that American Flag scene. you snuck that one in there. Well it all came together nicely so cheers to the begining of your directing career! But i must say that G-funk line…. you totally stole that from me. Regulate bitch!

oh and where is this line of boys you’re talking about… can i meet them?

  7. 7 George Jun 3rd, 2006 at 11:57 pm

Oh no Adriana. I think you trying to act surprised is my very favorite attempt at acting. Every time I watch that scene it doesn’t bring a smile to my face it brings hilarious laughter. In a good way. That was worth 800 dollars of Carlos’ money.

Nicely done Los. I love the blowing out the candle scene and ryan teaching adriana how to read. Very cute. I don’t know much about directing, but it looks like you did an awesome job. Keep up the good work. It’s money well spent!
