Cat Power – Cingular Ad (Directed By Lance Acord)

Yeah yeah, I know it’s another commercial, but hang on a sec and you might learn somethin’. If you think about it, this is actually a better commercial/video than JUICEBOX . Here’s why:
- Even though it’s a commercial, you don’t get the hit over the head feeling of product placement that Juicebox totally does with the Razr. Yeah you see it, but it actually has something to do with the story in the commercial, in fact it’s central to the mini-story as well as the ad.
- Speaking of which, the story is actually interesting. I think this situation, or something similar to it, is something we’ve all gone through, where you hit it off with someone and things go oh-so-well. Then you have to wait for the callback, which no matter how soon it may come, still takes an excruciatingly long time, then you check your phone every two seconds and jump when it rings, only to find it’s your damn roommate giving you shit for eating his cookies or something, like you’re the only one in the house who eats food. But I digress, essentially, the story = better than gay love in the bathroom while grandma cleans up dog piss, or so I’m told.
- Even though there are sounds thrown in the commercial, they aren’t as bad as the idiot sounds that are thrown in Juicebox. I shouldn’t have to explain myself here either.
- Am I the only one who noticed, that the girl in the beginning is totally smoking hot?
- Finally, the actual real reason I even put this up, is the use of the song in the commercial. It’s a cover of a cover called “Hanging on the Telephone.” Originally it was done by the Nerves, but then Blondie covered it (with much success I might add), and now my new obsession Cat Power (aka: Chan Marshall) has done a version, which kicks ass. If you haven’t picked up her newest album yet, THE GREATEST , well my friend, you’re your own worst enemy. Nothing beats a cute, drugged out, chronic depressive little lass who makes such melancholy music sound so gorgeous. Im sold and you should at least give her a try, you owe it to yourself.
This isn’t as one might say, a great commercial, but it is better than Juicebox, and that’s important for you to understand. Plus, it can be played as a game too, for instance, how many shots of the “service bars” can you spot amongst the background? (hint: One example can be found in the shot above)

I love the fact that commercials have become less commercial. It’s more about cool stuff + product than it is about the product. At least more than normal.
I count nine sets of bars.
Los, if I count the Strokes as girls (which I am), every video you have posted is focused on a girl in some way. Female singer or female director. My inner psychologist says “hmm….”.
Yeah I counted nine as well. It is so nice to see a commercial that is down to earth with real life situations and not pounding products into are heads. By the way does anyone know who the girl is in the commercial?
